To start the year out on the right page, “Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!” will take place from January 24-28, 2011. In a continued effort to promote the connection between reading and health education, the Department of Health and the Department of Education are pleased to announce the twelfth in a series of "Health Literacy in the Classroom" volunteer reading projects. Volunteer readers are asked to visit kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms around the state and read "Our Super Garden: Learning the Power of Healthy Eating by Eating What We Grow." Included are 20 kid-tested recipes from successful youth garden programs across the country, a color-coded chart of nutrients found in fruits and vegetables, and easy food preparation guidelines. The books, which include the story in both English and Spanish, are available in a limited quantity on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Florida Department of Health understands and supports that the ability to read, write, and understand letters and numbers is one of the basic components in maintaining good health and eliminating health disparities. We encourage you to help educate our future leaders about the significance of reading to improve health by participating in this wonderful volunteer opportunity.

To participate, please complete the Our Super Garden Request Form and submit it no later than Friday, January 14, 2011. Once the form is received, "Our Super Garden: Learning the Power of Healthy Eating by Eating What We Grow" will be mailed to you. After the book has been read in the class, please donate the book to the school classroom and complete the 2011 Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida Online Evaluation Survey.
