One of my friends asked me to put together a list of butterfly attractors for a new garden he's installing. Since I put this together for him, I'm going to share it with the group.
Some of the best butterfly plants in my yard are beebalm (monarda), american beautyberry (grows like a weed in my yard), milkweed (asclepias), dill and fennel, lantana, basil, organo, pentas, mint, blueberries, plumbago, mulberries (easy to grow but get big), passionflower (though they seem to decimate it when they are catepillars), marigolds, junipers, cedar, firebush, holly, porterweed, azaleas, asters, viburnums, purple coneflower, salvia (i have a lot of this too), dianthus, black eyed susan (i grow on vine), zinnias (very easy to grow), bottlebrush, parsley, rosemary (also grows very well), and golden dew drop (duranta erecta). Also, these weeds attract butterflies: Spanish needle (Bidens pilosa)*, clover, plantain (grows wild). Of course, the oaks and palmettos help out a lot too.
Here is a good list:

they also like little dishes of water.
