My lack of faith in HUMANS jumps up and grabs me.  How do we know that some person will not print up lots of the same bills and use them??  Looking for peace.   Walt Davin

Tell Occupy Tampa to check out R-Credits at www.commongoodfinance.org. Unless I've read it wrong, R-Credits are an alternative currency which I believe will be exchangeable if one moves elsewhere. Here's what they say:

The Revolution

At the heart of our design for a Common Good Economy is a revolutionary sustainable money system called R Credits™. The R stands for regenerative, revolutionary, responsible resilience. Like thermal insulation, this "R factor" can insulate us from the economic effects of big banks behaving badly.

R Credits combines features from successful alternative credit systems, adding a few technology innovations and procedures to ensure a secure, profitable experience for everyone. R Credits is designed to serve as the framework for a new democratic economic system that puts people and planet first -- a model easily adopted by individuals and businesses in any community, so that everyone can have healthy food, a home, healthcare, satisfying work, and a livable world.

We plan to launch R Credits in Greenfield, Massachusetts mid 2012, expanding quickly to other communities in the months that follow.

Here's some information you can post, Eric. Where will you put it? In an advertising spot? Or would you set up a page for it?  --Marie

Tampa Bay Time Skills Exchange

 Banking on Each Other

We’re rebuilding community and our local economy.
Neighbors help neighbors, exchanging skills and talents.
We earn hours for what we enjoy doing.
We spend  our hours getting the help we need.
Every hour is equal to every other.
The rich don’t get richer and the poor don’t get poorer.
No money is exchanged so no tax is paid.
If it’s not fun, it’s not sustainable.

Hi Marie- I was wondering if you would like to add a better description for the Tampa bay time bank? I can add it to the link.  I signed up and I absolutely love it! I want to use it as soon as possible. I too feel that getting funding quickly is the key! One way or another we need to get Federal Paperbacks in 10,000 entrepreenuers, in 10,000 backyards all throughout the Tampa bay area! Thats the kinda movement I see possible but only if they get the funding for it. That could be setting up aquaponics, or biofuel refineries, or  methane capture,   whatever idea towards implementing taking care of our environment would balance the equation. There are multiple capitals ( Social capital which the Time Bank deals with) which can get us many things accomplished. A person's volunteer time is HIGHLY valuable. I spoke with Habitat for Humanity, they label a Volunteer hour worth $18 a hour! So when people volunteer it means they really care!   In short-  if we can get the Social capital working with the Financial capital we have a leg - up on jump starting a new economy.

Hi all, I just posted a message about the new Time Bank (www.tampabaytime.org) which we started as a first step toward a local currency--a place to begin sharing skills and educating others about the more complex process of a local currency and of a local bank (see www.commongoodbank.org in case you think this might be a good idea. With a common good bank branch we could basically create our own money by using the same fractional reserve principle that the big banks use but charging very low fees and giving only sall loands to beneficial --and very small-- businesses that observe the tripple bottom line of people, planet and profit). Anyway, I see the time bank as a step toward those two goals by attracting like-minded people and building the alternative finance community.

SO--Tampa Bay Time is up and running and, before we go public, I want to be sure this group has an invitation (as we can only scale up a few at a time right now, until we get large enough to pay a coordinator).

If you're interested, come join us at www.tampabaytime.org. Or read up on time banking at www.timebanks.org.

ERIC, I love th eidea of Code Green Backs! YES!!! Or Code Green Bucks!!

By the way, in response to Walt's question, I understand there are ways to do all transacctions entirely online, just like the time bank, or your local bank., does.  Does anyone know about that software? I'm pretty sure it exists but don't have time to look for it right now.

For those who want to look at the various systems available, here is an introduction to the various alternative currencies.

Argentina during their economic crisis had to ad-hoc create local currencies. I think we should reproduce this in the form of a Code GreenBack's with information (our website name/address) a number to help stop forgeries, and a expiration to stop from an accumulation.

Eric,
Thanks, Eric, for thinking of me re the book. I wasn't expecting the book (actually thought I'd look over it and give it back at end of day but you had left.
Anyway, I don't have time to read it right now--three deadlines at work, plus the permaculture course on weekends--but if you don't need it for a while, I'll take a look later. Or share it with someone else.
Thanks again for bringing it to my attention.
Marie
