Tampa Bay-wide Movie Screening

Last night, at the perma-plenary session, it was decided that a Tampa Bay-wide movie screening would be an excellent integrative project to undertake on a bioregional scale. This forum is to aide in coordination of that effort.

We are hosting films in the fall for Habitat for Humanity once a month. I wanted to compile a 6-month-9 month plan of films to show. It would be cool if we could coordinate and somehow show the films…Continue

I'm seeking someone to take on the task of directing this initiative. We did a great job in February It would be awesome if we could coordinate for the Fall a film showing or two. Maybe pool resources to post advertisement online? For $100 we can get a lot of online advertisements. Facebook has been a great way of advertising in the past as well!

I really like that idea Mary and Rebecca- Most of the films you may have already seen Rebecca, also a lot of times these films may not be able to be shown all on the same day/time so stretching them out gives an event everywhere throughout the Tampa bay for people to find and connect with. By all means I would like to allow a few people to use the codegreencommunity@gmail.com account and email through that (or link facilitators/organizers to this group) so we can all connect/collaborate on this together. Its such an EASY thing to host movies and really brings people together around growing food! We've had great successes in New Port Richey would love to see other cities have success too!

The benefit of having 6 movies chosen in advance would reduce the work of arranging venues, especially if copies of the movies could be obtained in advance and distributed.  I have also really enjoyed having a theme at the Friends movies which encouraged our after movie discussions to delve deeper into the topic and seeing many of the same people each month conrtributed to community building.  These don't start until Sept., and I'll be gone all summer, but if there is still a need of coordinating venues in the fall I will facilitate promoting this series.

what about local groups all showing same films that Joshua's Friends' committee is setting up for Fall?  (and may 21 they are showing Transition 1.0---this would be an easy one for local groups to show around same time).  They are working on series of 6 food-related films, some of the ones they are considering:

The Future of Food http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9Y_QH_c70s&feature=related

We are in the process of starting a Transition St Pete Transition Handbook study group, and these films likely will be part of our "awareness raising" work.

I am getting lots of request to re-initiate the monthly movie showing. Please will someone help lead this initiative? I will help in anyway possible and I'm sure others will too, I need someone dedicated to making up a list of films to show and connecting venues to join in on showing them. We also want to coordinate organizers to be able to self-organize these movie showings themselves and just give them a list of movies to show and follow up discussions to have.

I would like to restart the interest of coordinating these monthly film showings would someone be interested in taking leadership of this project?

That would work, Eric. Ask them to provide comments like the below. It would be good to have even maybe three questions we ask everybody after the film. Like: "How did it go logistically?" "What did people respond to most strongly, in the film?' "What action items were decided upon and is there a target date for completing them?"

How about let's just approach everybody who did it last time and ask them to pick a date in March and get it on the calendar?

I bought and watched the Economics of Happiness by the way, and it is fabulous. Strongly recommend showing it! Very emotionally moving film, quality production, and great message that there are more important things than profits, and how do we return to those things?

Stacey and I (Mostly Stacey!) led the ball for February- but we kinda dropped it for march need help organizing and getting this going. What could we do to still make it happen? I was thinking just make it open source- have a open map/open events where people can purchase food inc and show it at their homes/community locations and we advertise it as a month long showing of Food Inc.  throughout the Tampa bay. Make it truly grassroots!

Update from Sharon Joy at Cafe Bohemia last Wednesday:
Eric

The film was powerful. There were around 20 of us at Bohemia on Wednesday evening.

Thank you so much for your tenaciousness in making arrangements to have this happen all over the region. It's a real precedent.

Any plans for a follow up? Conversations? I'll be at Eckerd for Sunday's Cool It!

Update from Bryan Roberts regarding the Roosevelt showing. Perhaps Bryan can fill us in on an attendee count.  ;-)

"We had no problems running the film.  I set up my laptop beforehand to allow the HD version to be fully downloaded before the screening.  We have a FIOS connection at the Roosevelt so download took only a few minutes"
