Alan Foster commented on Shawn Kelley's blog post Fresh Home Made Bread
"I agree, there is nothing like fresh baked bread. Have not bought any in months. Make whole wheat, white, irish soda bread, bagels and french bread regularly. Have also done hot dog and hamburger rolls. Little extra effort but so worth it."

DIY Project #15: Building a Simple, Efficient Wood Fired "Rocket Stove"

In my quest for "Strategic Self Sufficiency" and Emergency Preparedness I have  worked on many DIY projects that can help my family sustain ourselves during times of crisis.  The Rocket Stove was the cheapest and easiest of them all.  It took me less than an hour to gather  the parts needed,  cut and fit them together and assemble the stove.  Once I had the fire started, I was able to bring a pot of water to boil in only 3 1/2 minutes.  The design of this stove burns the wood efficiently using…See More

A More Resilient Community - Civilian Emergency Response Teams (C.E.R.T.)

At the foundation of Community Resilience is the ability to recover from disaster, and disasters can take on many forms. When Hurricane Andrew hit south Florida, I was watching it on the news. It wasn't a disaster to me. But it was a disaster for thousands of families.  What about the house fire down the road. Only three people effected, but it was a disaster to them just the same.  Car crashes, Fires, Floods, Tornadoes, Drought,  the list goes on and on.  It's scary when you realy think of all…See More

Fresh Home Made Bread

Have you seen the price of Bread lately?  Big stores charge $2.50 and up for a loaf.  You can get it cheaper than that at discount stores but... taste is poor at best.  And at the cheaper stores you only have 1-2 choices at most.NOT IN MY HOUSE......We bake fresh bread at home once or twice a week. Each week we try new recipe's to see what we like.  Then we share them with family and friends.  People still look at me funny when I say I'm Baking Bread today but once you have tasted fresh home…See More

The Backyard Vegetable Garden

Nothing taste better (or is better for you) than growing and eating your own fresh vegetables.  I got off to a late start this Fall but  have still managed a great harvest of Green Beans.  I stuffed a 4'X8" raised bed with Dragon Tongue bush beans and then decided to add about a dozen Kentucky Wonder pole beans grown in large pots around the garden.  Both taste wonderful fresh picked. We have gotten 8 or 10 meals out of them so far for my family of three.  Growing both types gives you a lot of…See More

Tell your personal story...
My TRANSITION began when I was laid off my job of 19yrs at the beginning of the Recessionin 2008. Since then I(and many others) have seen what the first steps in the global Transition may look like. Lucky for us, my family and I now live in the home I grew up in and the mortgage was paid off years ago. (Thanks Dad)
Over the last three years I have devoted much of my time to what I call "Strategic Self Reliance". Strategic in the way it is applied. Funds available vs Return Value.
I have spent most of my time with food production(wife loves fresh sugar snap peas)but with many of my projects it comes down to funds available or should I say lack of funds. My garden needs to cover most of my yard to realy provide enough food. I need to raise some chickens but live in an unincorporated area that does not allow me to do so. I need to Get more worms for my Vermicompost Bin, I need more(cheap) solar power, I need... Well you get the idea..
I guess instead of I need, I should be saying WE need. We need to work together, one community at a time. WE need open source information. I tried getting local training for Solar Power or Permiculture Design but it was EXPENSIVE....Much of what I have learned has been FREE from internet sources.
Today I will be picking fresh Green beans for dinner. Sugar snap peas, cuccumbers, lettuce and tomatos are filling in the garden beds and
Sunflowers and Zinnia's have been giving us fresh flowers for weeks now. I think I need to go water my plants now.
What brings you here? How did you hear about Code Green Community?
