How many of you survived at one degree warmer this week? We keep ours at 81 during the day and 80 in the evenings/nighttime when it gets a bit hot for sleeping. If you made it through even a day with warmer temperatures, pat yourself on the back! If it felt too warm to do this all of the time, try raising it each time you leave the house, or commit to one day a week where you can handle one degree warmer.…

This week's challenge is to write to one of your elected officials - either at the local, state or federal level. Topic? You pick! Most local governments are in the process of finalizing budgets for next year -tell them what programs you want preserved or share your ideas for cuts. At the State and Federal level, maybe you have strong feelings about the budget priorities, ideas to save money or want to encourage them to vote/not for a certain Bill. We challenge you to take this small…

This week's challenge focuses on trying to break down some of the social barriers that have become more prevalent over the past decade between neighbors and others in our communities. My challenge to you is to say "hello" to someone new - at the grocery store, at work or in your neighborhood. Growing up in a small town, I often find a remnant characteristic in myself in that I cannot NOT waive at someone in a neighborhood - even when driving…

We keep getting more feedback and interest in the challenge! It is exciting to see it grow! This challenge asked everyone to check each outlet in their home and find things that they rarely use and unplug them. My family found 6 items and it was a fun "hunt" for the kids! Just unplugging our VCR that we haven't used in about 5 years will save us about a $1.05/month in electricity and reduces our household carbon footprint by 10.75 lbs of CO2! …

A Clarification Meant to Refocus and Reconnect Our Mission and Our Readers - freepinellas.wordpress.com
In an attempt to create a simpler goal within my blog and organization, I have decided that my mission goal of promoting the principles of community involvement, economic sustainability, industrial responsibility, ecological conservation, political awareness, social resiliency, and personal accountability to enhance the mind, body, spirit, and community can be brought to the audience through one phrase. Social consciousness. This is not a obligation of action, but it is a…

Genetically Modified Problems - freepinellas.wordpress.com
In agricultural states across the country, farmers are facing a crisis that could affect food production and the economy if it isn’t handled promptly. Genetically modified foods have been commonplace for almost two decades and have come under scrutiny by farmers and scientists with this growing emergency. Genetically modified (GM) is a term to describe organic products like food and plants that have been…

Pinellas County Green Living Expo - freepinellas.wordpress.com
I spent yesterday at the St. Pete Coliseum for the green exposition. It featured vendors from all walks of the sustainability spectrum and while I spent four hours there, I did not get around to all the booths. So, I will have to tell you about the four main stalls that I took the time to speak with the operators. These stalls, coincidentally, touch on the main aspects of my blog: green business, green living, human sustainability, and green…

A Day Without Shoes - freepinellas.wordpress.com
My girlfriend recently sent me an invitation for “One Day Without Shoes”, which was sponsored by Tom’s Shoes. The event took place on Thursday, April 8th, 2010. I have pasted their announcement below:
“One Day Without Shoes is the day we spread awareness about the impact a simple pair of shoes can have on a child’s life. On April 8th, we ask people to go the day, part of the day or even just a few minutes, barefoot, to experience…
