Keep new drilling from spreading closer to us by calling Sen. George
LeMieux: and asking him to join Sen. Bill Nelson in support of a strong
clean energy bill without expanded drilling; and to move us away from
dirty, dangerous oil and coal, toward clean, safe, renewable, efficient
energy.

With much of the Gulf of Mexico coast facing an environmental disaster, U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson is scheduled to meet Friday with Pensacola
officials about steps the federal government and military are taking to
protect the area from a giant oil slick increasing in size and spreading
from the site of the Deepwater Horizon rig.

Naval Air Station Pensacola is serving as a staging facility for U.S. Coast Guard
contractors.

Nelson’s visit comes on the heels of a letter he wrote Thursday to President Barack Obama in which he calls for an
indefinite halt to the administration’s plans for expanding offshore
drilling operations. Nelson also revealed he’s filing legislation aimed
at blocking the administration’s plans.

Oil rigs have been kept from 125 miles to 235 miles away from Florida’s Gulf coast under a 2006
law written by Nelson and former Sen. Mel Martinez.

“Questions about the practices of the oil industry raised in the wake of this
still-unfolding incident require that you postpone indefinitely plans
for expanded offshore drilling operations,” Nelson wrote to the
president.

Earlier this week, the Florida Democrat also called for an investigation into the Louisiana rig disaster by the Senate
Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

Until we have the self control & discipline to reform transport policy around railways instead of primarily roads, kiss the oceans goodbye. Dispersants just mix & hide the oil from the surface, making a toxic brew that drifts along creating dead zones as it goes. Happy motoring...

See Christopher C. Swan's "ELECTRIC WATER" (New Society Press, 2007) and his website "Suntrain Transportation Corporation". It took about 20 years after Ike's Freeway act in 1956 for the trucks to rule freight transport. Now, we have about 10 years to put dormant rail branch lines back together in sufficiency to keep food and necessities of life moving as Peak Oil impacts trucking. Motor fuel rationing comes early this decade...

Accoutrements of motoring (roads, etc.) are also part of the problem facing the entrepreneurs looking for the perfect car. Issues of road maintenance are another unfunded requisite of trying to continue motor mania. Anyone interested in dormant rail corridor can see "US Rail Map Atlas Volumes"from spv.co.uk and determine what ran nearest. To encourage rebuild program, reformed US Army/Guard Railroad Operating & Maintenance Battalions seem most applicable. As military units bring priority corridors to de-minimus standard, local operators take control and military logistics unit moves to next project on list.

As part of this era, Chinese railway building partnership can ally with projects in USA to assure food deliveries to China suffering desertification/famine threat. US must recharge(NAWAPA) critical aquifers such as the Central Valley in California, and the corn/wheat belt Ogallala Aquifer. As an aside, criticism has been leveled at the NAWAPA proposal on environmental grounds. Laughable in the context of tarbaby pollution around the globe...

As James Howard Kunstler ("The Long Emergency") mentions, local railways bring back a workforce that can FIX things and work at jobs that cannot be sent overseas. Truckers will drive shorter pick-up and delivery; many trucking firms will be business partners with local & regional railways. Find "OFFICIAL GUIDE" for railway information around your vicinity. Circa 1920-1950 shows best mileage, max rr miles in US was circa 1920. You can do this research and share with County Planning Dept.
